Orchha Travel Guide: Best Time, How to Reach & Budget
Orchha is worth a day of your Madhya Pradesh trip, but only if you go in the right season and actually go inside. We did neither.
Four of us (Lucie, Gurpreet, Abhishek and me) came from Khajuraho in sticky early-monsoon heat. We skipped the palaces and the big temple, and spent most of our afternoon looking for a shady spot by the river. The town still won me over: a quiet riverside place with huge palaces, old cenotaphs and almost none of the rush of bigger heritage towns.
This guide covers the best time to visit Orchha, how to get there from Khajuraho and Jhansi, what to see, current entry fees, and exactly what our trip cost. It’s built from our own day there, plus the lessons we learned the hard way.

Orchha was the capital of the Bundela kings, founded in the 16th century by Rudra Pratap Singh. Its “historic ensemble” has been on UNESCO’s tentative list for World Heritage status since 2019.
Best time to visit Orchha
Go between late October and mid-March. Days are pleasant, around 24°C in winter, and you can walk between the palaces, temples and river all day without wilting.
Avoid April to June. Highs average about 38°C and can pass 42°C in late May.

Monsoon (July to September) turns everything green and fills the Betwa, but the river can flood and the wildlife sanctuary may close for a while. We went in early July 2019, before the rains had properly arrived: hot, humid, and the Betwa thin and unimpressive. If you do go in monsoon, aim for August or September, when the river is full.
If you can, time your visit with a weekday. Ram Raja Temple draws big pilgrim crowds, and the queue was the reason we skipped it.
How to reach Orchha
Orchha has no airport and only a tiny railway station, so almost everyone arrives through Jhansi or by road from Khajuraho. We did the classic loop: Delhi to Khajuraho by train, Khajuraho to Orchha by taxi, then Orchha to Jhansi and the train back to Delhi.
From Khajuraho (about 170 km, 3 hours): A taxi is the easiest way. We left at 7 AM and reached Orchha around 10:30 AM. The cab cost ₹2,500 for four of us, so ₹625 each.
From Jhansi (about 16 km, 30 minutes): Jhansi Junction is on the main Delhi–Mumbai line, with fast trains like the Shatabdi. From the station, take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to Orchha.
From Orchha back to Jhansi: Autos wait in the main market area. A full auto to Jhansi station was quoted at ₹250. We paid ₹200 and shared it with two other passengers. Bargain a little, and leave extra time: ours nearly hit a cow on the way, and the driver was mostly worried about his headlights.
By air: The nearest airports are Gwalior (about 119 km) and Khajuraho (about 170 km). Both are a few hours by road from Orchha.
Train back to Delhi: We took the Shatabdi from Jhansi at 6:40 PM. It reaches New Delhi in about 4.5 hours.
Things to do in Orchha
Most sights sit within walking distance of each other, between the fort and the Betwa river.
- Orchha Fort complex. The heart of town, on an island in the Betwa. Inside are Raja Mahal, with painted ceilings, and Jahangir Mahal, built for the Mughal emperor’s visit, with views from its upper floors. We only saw it from outside. Don’t make that mistake.
- Ram Raja Temple. The only temple in India where Ram is worshipped as a king, complete with a daily guard of honour. It’s a working pilgrimage site, so expect queues. Entry is free.
- Chaturbhuj Temple. A towering temple next to Ram Raja. Climb up for one of the best views over the town.
- The chhatris by the Betwa. A row of royal cenotaphs along the riverbank, beautiful at sunset. This is where we spent our afternoon, looking for a clean, shady spot to sit.
- Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary. A forested stretch between the Betwa and Jamni rivers, with a ticket counter at the gate. You can walk the trails, and boating was on offer when we were there.
- Laxmi Narayan Temple. A fort-like temple on a hill just outside town, known for its murals.
Tip: Breakfast is worth planning. We ate at Ramraja Restaurant & Cafe, which served eggless pancakes and honey paratha, something I haven’t found anywhere since.
Orchha entry fees and timings
The big difference is for foreign visitors: palace entry costs about 25 times more than for Indians. That’s why our friend Lucie, a student who had already been inside on an earlier trip, skipped it.

Our Khajuraho and Orchha budget: about ₹4,000 per person
The whole trip from Delhi and back, Khajuraho included, came to ₹3,985 per person. I expected around ₹3,000. Trains and the taxi were the big costs.

5 mistakes we made in Orchha, so you don’t
- We went in the wrong season. The heat drained us, and the Betwa was low and unimpressive. Go between late October and mid-March.
- We didn’t go inside the fort. We walked around the outside and felt there wasn’t much to see. The palace interiors are the whole point, and for Indians the ticket is just ₹10.
- We skipped Ram Raja Temple because of the queue. Go early in the morning or on a weekday instead of giving it up.
- We gave Orchha half a day. We arrived at 10:30 AM and left for a 6:40 PM train. Stay one night to see sunset at the chhatris and walk the town without rushing.
- We didn’t plan where to sit by the river. Parts of the riverbank near the chhatris aren’t clean, and the side we wanted was fenced off. Head for the wildlife sanctuary side, which has a ticket counter and a better view.
One thing we got right: sharing everything. Four people splitting a taxi and an auto kept the whole trip under ₹4,000 each.

Can I do Khajuraho and Orchha in one trip? Yes. Delhi → Khajuraho by train, Khajuraho → Orchha by taxi, Orchha → Jhansi by auto, then Jhansi → Delhi by train. We did it in two days for about ₹4,000 each.
Watch our Orchha trip
Orchha deserved better than the rushed, sweaty half-day we gave it. Go in winter, buy the ₹10 ticket, and stay for sunset at the chhatris. I’d love to go back and do it properly.
Watch the whole day, auto ride and all, in the video above. For the first half of the trip, see Temples of Khajuraho and Raneh Falls.
